2001-A SPACE ODYSSEY, 7 step outline.

2001-spacesuit1STEP1 THE SETUP.

MOONWALKER and his clan inhabit a hostile world, where only the fierce survive. Surrounded by food, in the form of animals, the man-apes scavenge for food in the barren earth.

STEP 2 THE INCITING INCIDENT.

One day the man-apes come upon a strange black object. A perfectly symmetrical obelisk has appeared from no-where. The clan is awestruck by the alien object and the sounds eminating from it. They approach with growing exitement. Even the primative brains of the pre-humans realize that something amazing is happening. Moonwatcher is the first to touch the stange object, initiating a chain of events that will see his species dominate the earth. The object has changed them forever.

STEP 3 ACT ONE TURNING POINT.

Four million years later, humans are beginning to travel into space. An intenseĀ  magnetic field leads colonists on the moon to another of the strange objects. It has obviously been buried there by non humans. Once again it is touched by human hands, and will lead to a mission toward the outer solar system.

STEP 4 MID POINT.

One million miles from earth, the spacecraft Discovery, is heading toward Jupiter. Hal 9000, an artificial intelligence controls the ship. But HAL seems to be having a problem, reporting false failures of the ship. The crew becomes suspicious.

STEP 5 ACT TWO TURNING POINT.

DAVE BOWMAN is now the last surviving crew member, after HAL opened the pod bay doors, releasing all the oxygen into space. BOWMAN was in the process of waking the crew from hibernation and they were killed. He makes his way to the computer brain control area, and disconnects HAL.

STEP 6: THE CLIMAX-ACT THREE TURNING POINT.

The real purpose of the journey is revealed to BOWMAN. The alien arifact on the moon sent a signal directly to Jupiter, the mission is to find out why.

STEP 7: THE RESOLUTION.

Arriving at the Jupiter monolith, BOWMAN takes a journey that transcends space and time. Gaining the knowledge of the extra- terrestrials, humans have awoken to another stage of evolution.

7 Step outline: The Matrix.

matrix_ver13STEP 1: THE SETUP.

The central protagonist in the film is THOMAS ANDERSON, aka NEO. He is an unassuming software programmer for a respectable company, NEO is the hacker alias he goes by, and much of his life is spent on computers. It is obvious MR ANDERSON is unhappy with his life, he is pale and withdrawn, and spends much of his time searching the net for clues to the nature of the Matrix and the whereabouts of MORPHEUS, who he suspects may deliver some answers. Little does he know, the answers will find him very soon.

STEP 2: THE INCITING INCIDENT.

The inciting incident occurs when MR ANDERSON is taken into custody by ‘The Agents’, the bad guys of the film. When he is asked to help them trap MORPHEUS he becomes hostile. He is then shown a terrifying glimpse into what is really going on around him.

STEP 3: THE ACT 1 TURNING POINT.

NEO is contacted by MORPHEUS and is given two options. Take a ‘blue pill’ and return to his life, or take a ‘red pill’ and find out the truth. He decides on the ‘red pill’, and is catapulted into a completely different reality. The knowledge that he has been living in a computer generated simulation is revealed. He now, somewhat reluctantly, sees the world as it really is.

STEP 4: MID POINT.

NEO now realizes that he can never return to THE MATRIX as Mr Anderson. MORPHEUS has told NEO about his belief that he is the ‘one’, and will have the ability to defeat the agents, and change THE MATRIX ‘as he sees fit’. But NEO is consumed with self doubt.

STEP 5 ACT 2 TURNING POINT.

MORPHEUS is captured by the ‘agents’, betrayed by SYPHER. NEO must now make the decision to return to the MATRIX and attempt to rescue him, or not.

STEP 6 THE CLIMAX, ACT THREE TURNING POINT.

NEO is confronted by AGENT SMITH. But instead of running, as is usually the case. NEO stands and fights.

STEP 7 THE RESOLUTION.

NEO now knows for sure that he is the ‘one’. He has defeated the ‘Agents’, and literally cheated death. He has the girl, TRINITY, and now has the power to challenge the machines.

Appartied is comming to an end. To avoid conflict, security forces in south africa demand assurances of amnesty for violations of human rights. Only those who publicly confess to their crimes are offered amnesty. A convoy, the ‘truth and reconciliation commission’, is travelling the countryside taking statements from the guilty. Hillary swanks character (a lawyer) is travelling with the convoy, A man is captive in the back of a police vehicle. He is planning on giving evidence. He is brought to a location where he meets an old friend who is now the head of a security agency. He tries to convince him to keep his mouth shut. The two men were involved in an incident 14 years ago. They dissagree on what action to take.
